Pets In Popular Movies
Over half of the films that you watch in your lifetime will likely feature pets as important characters in the storyline. Script writers are fond of using pets in film because they add an emotional touch to the plot of a movie.
Movies use all the common pets you’d expect to see, such as dogs and cats, but many movies make use of more non-traditional pets. Consider the movie “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events,” which features a snake as a pet.
Many films actually include pets as central characters, often making for a fantastic family movie. Here are just a few movies that take advantage of the humor and emotion that a pet can bring to a film.
The 101 Dalmatians were the central characters in the movie of the same name. In that movie, the Dalmatians attempt to rescue their large puppy family from the evil Cruella Deville.
The “Dr. Dolittle” trilogy of movies stars Eddie Murphy as a scientist who can talk to animals. These animals often come to him for help, creating hilarious situations, but the doctor is less than pleased with his abilities.
Pets often play the role of a companion to the protagonist in a movie. Milo in “The Mask” is a good example of this kind of role. He plays Jim Carrey’s companion and friend, and even helps defeat the antagonists of the movie.
The film classic “The Wizard of Oz,” released in 1939, shows that pets have been used as major characters in film for as long as movies have been around. In this movie, Dorothy is accompanied by her faithful dog Toto, who stays by her side in her quest to find the Wizard of Oz and return to her home in Kansas.
The recent film “Garfield” used computer-generated graphics to create an animated version of the popular comic strip cat. These film effects are pushing the boundaries of film every year, and you can bet that computer-generated pets will be receiving attention. It’s fun to watch these movie pets as we hear the celebrity voice actors who bring them to life and give them personality.
