The Boxer is one of the happiest dog breeds around. In fact, they are energetic, intelligent, athletic and loyal dogs with sweet, playful temperaments. It is hard to believe that they were historically used for dog fighting. Of course, the breed was developed into the lovable, hard working canine we know and love today.

The Boxer’s ancestors were believed to be a warrior breed of old fighting dogs known as Assyrian Molossian. The Molossian was a strong, courageous dog used in battles.

They behave well with other household pets, but are cautious with strange pets and people which make them good potential guard dogs.

The Boxer is a highly sociable dog that even gets along well with other family pets. However, they can be distrusting of strangers. Boxer dogs love their family members, especially children.

Boxer dogs require plenty of exercise (at least two 20 minute walks daily). Boxers can comfortably live both in the country or the city. However, they are not good apartment dogs.

Genetically, these dogs are either fawn or brindle, with excessive white markings overlying the base coat color. Like fair-skinned humans, white Boxers have a higher risk of sunburn and associated skin cancers than colored Boxers. The extreme piebald gene, which is responsible for white markings in Boxers, is linked to congenital sensorineural deafness in dogs.

Boxers are very intelligent but can be boisterous. For that reason, obedience training is a must. The breed enjoys training and learns easily. He has a well-angulated rear with long haunches for great power. His back remains level when he moves for efficiency and endurance.

The Gunters run a sizeable Boxer kennel but say that the breed is very accepting of being a kennel dog. However, at Guntop the Boxers are always kennelled with another dog because they do enjoy company.

Boxers are a bright, energetic and playful breed and tend to be very good with children. They are active dogs and require adequate exercise to prevent boredom-associated behaviors such as chewing or digging. Boxers have earned a slight reputation of being “headstrong,” which can be related to inappropriate obedience training.
