This is an exciting time with amazing advances in veterinary medicine. The area of molecular genetics has become one of the hottest areas of research bringing the development of genetic testing to dog breeders. So why as a pet owner is this information important?

The following information is to help owners make responsible decisions to clean up behind their pets and to avoid areas where irresponsible pet owners have not cleaned up and shows the fairness is the requirement to clean up behind your pet.

Mycoplasma haemocanis (formerly Hemobartonella canis) rarely causes anemia in dogs with normal spleens and normal immune systems. Clinical anemia can develop when a carrier dog is splenectomized or when a splenectomized dog is transfused with blood from a carrier donor. M. haemocanis may be a widespread latent infection in kennel-raised dogs.

In fact, toxins, infections, and other environmental factors can cause congenital diseases. It is also important to remember that not all genetic diseases are identifiable at birth. A good example of this is progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) in Portuguese Water Dogs (PWDs).

Unfortunately, there is no cure known for the disease. It always leads to death, although dogs often need to be put to sleep due to severe behavioural problems even before this, often less than a year since the starting of the symptoms.

Piles of feces attract dogs. Just by the mere act of a dog sniffing the feces of an infected dog or a carrier dog is adequate to spread this disease.

Puppies that receive two affected genes, one from each carrier parent, will develop the disease. These are important points to keep in mind for breeders as well as pet owners. The goal of breeders is to create healthy puppies while maintaining breed genetic diversity.

Unfortunately there is no one certain symptom which could be an identifier of the NCL. The symptoms can have many variations, depending on the breed, the dog and its original characteristics. Thus, even within the same breed there can be dogs with very different symptoms.

Genetic (DNA based) tests come in two varieties. The first type is a mutation based test. These detect the exact DNA defect or mutation that is the cause of the disease.

One of the symptoms can be an increased, periodical restlessness and aimless wandering. As the disease progresses the symptoms get worse and the time between periods shorten. Eventually the dog wanders in a manic manner, being unable to relax.

Four were euthanized once the problem was noted. One was euthanized because of “pain” as a very young puppy.
