If you’re looking to pick up a new hobby in the form of raring tropical fishes as pets, then you should understand and accept that being a pet owner is indeed a big responsibility, as you’re expected to give your utmost care and to provide them with an environment where they can thrive in. Getting ready in the form of knowing what environment will no doubt help you to pick up the hobby easier. Thus this article will address the couple of things you should know before buying any pet fish.

The Fish Tank

Firstly you have to ensure that your fish have a healthy environment to thrive in, and thus getting the biggest fish tank allowable can be more beneficial than getting a smaller one. While it’s more than letting your fish have more space to roam around, it is also easier to regulate the water temperature in a bigger tank, not to mention that with a bigger tank you’ll be able to rare more fishes in the future should you choose to.

When decorating your fish tank, be sure to specifically prepare a few hiding spots for your fish, this is because animals in general get stressed out easily and giving them a place to hide can help them cope with stresses easier. This is especially important if your placement of your fish tank is under direct sunlight, as we all know direct sunlight is not good for anyone’s health, so are your fishes.

Your Fish Breed

A costly mistake made by first time owner is that they tend to place a lot of different breed of fishes in the same tank all at once, this is bad for those fishes because firstly they need time to get used to the environment, having not done that and coupled with the stress added because of the other fishes, it can sometimes kill them. Therefore what you should do is let your fish get used to the environment before introducing other type of fishes in.

Another important factor to keep them healthy is by feeding them properly, have supplements on top of your normal fish flakes, do not over feed them as it can easily clog up the filter system as well as make the tank dirty. One good way to know that you’re overfeeding them is to see if there are extra flakes at the bottom of the tank.

Lastly, be sure to keep the water in the tank clean, the best practice is to drain and change the water in your tank at least twice a month, this way not only your fishy friends will be happy, you too can enjoy the beautiful view of your aquarium!
